Some years ago, a friend told me about his most favoured place for holiday with this family, a small city with name Büsum, in the east on the German coast line on the northern sea. He gushed about the delicious fish and shrimps from there, delivered daily fresh and with highest quality from the fish boats in the harbour. We realised, that this city has a public airfield, with cheap prices for the landing fees and fuel, only some kilometres away from the center of the city. In this moment, the idea for a common venture was born, to combine our fascination for flying with his recommendation for the amazing fish. From this day on, we looked out for a day on the weekend, with adequate weather conditions to fly the distance to there with 500km for 2 times, with related 5 ours total time in the air, to land there for the lunch break and to eat some fresh fish. Some days ago, on Eastern Monday, this intension became reality.
Following the weather forecast on the days before, the weather went out with very comfortable conditions for a longer flight to Germanys north, with wind blowing form the south, but without generating significant turbulences on the preferred flight altitude, higher than 4500 feet over sea level.
On the first flight, we could take profit from the wind from the south, so that instead of 2.5 hrs flight time, only 1:58 hrs and only 32 litres super fuel were needed to land after the flight distance of 507 kilometres on the airfield ‘Heide- Büsum’. During the last minutes before the landing, we could collect some fascinating impressions, seeing the coast line during ebb tide.

Following our intension, we took a taxi to get to the city and could test some different specials with fresh fish. The time in the city we also used to visit the small harbour and the promenade on the coast, where we could see how within one hour, the flood returned. Following the weather forecast, already on the early afternoon, a front with dark clouds coming from the west became visible, growing clearer. After about 3 hours on the ground, we lifted off again from the airfield for the returning flight.

As ‘add on’ for the returing flight, we decided to spend additional 30 minutes to fly to the west to collect some impressions from the isles in the west of the German coastline on the northern sea. Due to the wind, blowing from the south, as already during our flight in the morning, again we could see the strong deviation between the ‘indicated air speed’, showing the speed of our airplane inside the surrounding air stream, deviating to the ‘speed over ground’, calculated by our navigation instrument, always with about 45 kilometres. As consequence, during the returning flight, the wind blowing still from the south, now meant a disadvantage so that about 3 hrs were necessary to return for landing on the glider airfield of the flight club FSVOR in Reinheim.
