Visit of ADAC helicopter maintenance centre

On Saturday, September the 21st , some ESAaviators followed a very exclusive invitation for a guided tour at the helicopter maintenance centre of the ADAC with base on the public airfield Bonn-Hangelar.

Four airplanes with club members from ESOC and EumetSat could take use of the great weather on that day for a flight, following the Rhein river to the north. At 11.00 local the guided tour started, leading through the maintenance area and pilot training installations.

As biggest site of the ADAC helicopters, the site in Bonn-Hangelar provides the biggest part with the maintenance of rescue helicopters from the ADAC.  As average, each rescue helicopter lifts of 4 times per day for a rescue mission. As with all aircrafts, depending on the flying hours and specific mission profile, a dedicqated maintenance plan has to be followed.

As additional tasks, based on the feedback of mission members, the engineers on the site are also working on useful modifications and extension with the helicopter hardware and equipment, starting with practical improvements of the locks of the doors, up to optimisations and further development with the instrumentation, air conditioning, navigation and communication facilities in the helicopters.

At the second part, the tour lead to the training facilities for the pilots. As one of the highlights of the tour, the group was invited to test their skills with the amazing full flight simulators. After the tour and as one of the most important activities of the group, the giant burgers of the Restaurant ‘Udets’ on the airfield could have been tested.
