After several tries, on the public holiday on June the 19th, for me a dream became true, to fly to HELGOLAND island, as only German isle on the open northern sea. Due to very special statutory requirements with customs, a dedicated self briefing become necessary. As very lucky circumstance, in the days before, the weather forecast for the planned ‘day of the flight’ improved step by step.
After approval of the issued flight plan with the German ‘flight safety agency’ DFS, the venture stated as planned with departure from glider airfield Reinheim. After leaving the airspace of ‘Frankfurt am Main’ behind, the DYNAMIC WT9 airplane could be brought to a very comfortable cruising altitude at ‘flightlevel 65’ , with more than 200km speed consuming only ~14 liters Super fuel per hour. As forecasted, after a short sequence with dark weather, on the last kilometres before the coast, the weather cleared up again to show the beauty of the coast line with the islands of the ‘Ostfrisische Inseln’ chained in one row until the horizon. Due to the very good view, already some minutes after the coast line was left, with 5000 feet altitude to sea level, HELGOLAND island become visible on the horizon. During the entire time over the see, the winds had only light strength, with ~12 knots, without any turbulences, which also lead to a very relaxed and smooth approach. During landing approach on ‘runway tri tri’, the wind with only 10° deviaton from the left was helpful so that only 200 meters were needed to land save on the ‘dune island’, acting like a carrier nearby the main isle. The remaining afternoon I could use to do the ‘mandatory walk’ along the famous cliffs, to watch the famous ‘lange Anna’ a very impressing single cliff rock on the west end of the isle.
