A perfect moment found to fly to the alps

One week ago, the idea come up to use the bank holiday on May the 29th, to fly to the south to land somewhere close to the ‘lake of Konstanz’, close to the border to Austria. Some days later, two pilots and two passengers could be found for participation.

The weather situation and daily forecast for the northern region of the alps, direct close to ‘lake of Konstanz’ , showed a recurrent stable trend, in the morning always with calm conditions, mostly without any clouds, but after some hours and after noon with strong growing masses with clouds in critical altitude, which can make flying according to ‘visual flight rules’ very fast quite challenging, difficult and risky.

After carefully analysis of the daily weather forecast from various different sources, the crew of one of the participating airplane met already at 9:15 AM on the airfield of the glider club in Reinheim, a grass strip in the north of the ‘Odenwald region’,  to depart 30 minutes later to the south. After ~75 minutes flight time, the northern region of the alps was reached. After connecting the radio frequency of ‘Innsbruck Radar’ , the flight route followed for 60 minutes a flight route via the alps, mostly without any turbulences but many strong impressions from the scenery of surrounding mountains.

In details, the routing followed the areas Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the western valley below the ‘Zugspitze’ mountain to Imst, Landeck, St. Anton with the ‘Arlberg pass road’, along Blundenz, Feldkirch, to reach the Austrian city Bregenz at the ‘lake of Konstanz’. After passing the ‘lake of Konstanz’, the crew landed for re-fulling in Mengen-Hohentengen and finally on airfield Leutkirch-Unterzeil, to meet with the other air crew for the lunch break.
